O SI YO'(Greetings) My brothers and sisters, and all our Relations
My name is James and I am here to share with you information about a place located in West Plains, Missouri. The place is a Spring. This Spring was a Spiritual Gathering place for the indigenous group of people that have from the beginning of time and still do live here in the Ozark Plateau Area. Here is a link to Photos of building.
When the settlers began coming into this area the Native people where still using this spring as a place to come and be together. As time went on the native people were forced out leaving behind there sacred spring, and the area was populated with settlers seeking their land. Some of our people remained by taking on white identities, many were to be known as Black Dutch or Irish. They were able to surive and prosper, but their ways were not forgotten, just not spoken of.
I first became aware of the Spring in October of 1998 and found out that it was still flowing. As the town of West Plains grew the area at the spring was made into a city park. In 1934 the United States Postal Service accuired the property and built a post office. During construction there were attemps to seal the spring, this could not be done. The springs flow was then piped through the building and concreted beneath the basement floor.
It is our Goal to acquire this property so that this Spring can once again be used by our people as a place to gather and share our spiritual and cultural ideas. But even more important, we need to save this Spring for our future generations and we need your support and help to accomplish this goal.
