O SI YO', My Brothers and Sisters and all our Relations
My name is James Duncan and I am a Cherokee (Bird Clan), born in Tahlequah,
Oklahoma. But even more important, I am a member of the family of Nations
called Native Americans, that indigenous group of people that lived here
from the beginning of time, here in the Americas. Like many of our relations
I grew up away from our tribe (our people, our language), not because I
wanted to, or that my parents wanted to. They did what they had to do in
order to surive, and we did. I remember as a child, every summer in August
we would travel back to Oklahoma to visit. There my Grandmother (Ada Vann)
would talk to me and tell me stories. What I remember most is, she would
tell me; "Jimmy, you are 'Keetoowah' , do not forget this name"
More to come. . . .
